A Mom’s Guide to Playgrounds
Whether you’re looking for a fun, safe place to play or a way for you and your kids to burn off some energy, you’re in the right place! As a working mom of two (ages three and one) with a husband who works long hours, I often venture out solo with the kids on the weekends. I look for spots that are fun, easy to navigate, and full of adventure. We are lucky to have some amazing parks and playgrounds within Greater Dalton and I’m excited to spotlight our favorites.

For getting our energy out, I love Haig Mill Lake, Heritage Point, Civitan, and Westside Parks. Each one has walking trails or bike paths and adventure-filled play structures. My three-year-old runs or bikes while my one-year-old enjoys the stroller rides. They both then face their fears on swings, slides, and rock walls. I’m able to get in a good walk, and they can play on a playground, what could be better?
Our favorite hidden gem is Riverbend Park, with big slides, a rock wall, shaded picnic tables, and open space to run – perfect for our “laps before naps” weekend tradition. We rarely run into others here, which is nice for some peaceful play. It’s not fenced but still feels safe due to its location.
For hot days, we head to Mack Gaston Community Center’s $2 splash pad or the creek at Civitan Park for a refreshing splash. If you don’t mind your kids getting their clothes dirty, the creek is a great option.

Finally, if you want to relax with friends, grab a to-go beer from Dalton Brewing Company and walk on over to Dalton Green Park on Selvidge Street downtown. It is the best of both worlds. It’s perfect for kids under six, with slides, swings, and open green space to play ball or frisbee. It’s become a favorite Friday stop for us!
All of these parks are safe, fun, and great for kids of all ages. I hope to see you at one of them soon!
